Product page SEO checklist for online stores
The on-page checks that decide whether a product page gets indexed, shown and clicked — in the order worth fixing them.
A product page ranks when search engines can crawl it, decide it is worth indexing, understand exactly what it sells, and show a result people want to click. This checklist covers the on-page part of that — what a store owner controls on every product. It does not replace backlinks or brand demand, but pages that miss these basics rarely rank, however strong the rest of the site is.
1. Make sure the page can be indexed
The page returns a 200 status, is not blocked by robots.txt or a noindex tag, has a self-referencing canonical URL, and is listed in your XML sitemap. Keep product URLs stable; if a URL has to change, 301-redirect the old one.
Check the page indexing report in Google Search Console. Many products marked 'Crawled – currently not indexed' usually means Google found those pages too thin or too similar to other pages — often because they reuse the manufacturer's description word for word.
2. Write a title and description people click
Start the title with the product's real name and the words buyers search — brand, model, key spec — and keep it to roughly 50–60 characters so it is not cut off. Write a meta description of about 140–160 characters that says why this offer is worth clicking: price, delivery, warranty or a standout feature.
Search Console's query data shows what people actually type to find each product. If a page ranks on page one but gets almost no clicks, the title and description are the first things to rewrite.
3. Give the page unique, structured content
Use one H1 with the product name, then H2 and H3 headings for features, specifications and questions. Write original copy that answers what a buyer needs to decide — what it does, who it is for, what is in the box, what it works with — rather than a pasted spec sheet.
Add descriptive alt text to product images, a short FAQ with self-contained answers, and links to the parent category and related products, so shoppers and crawlers can move through the catalogue.
4. Add structured data and check real-world speed
Add valid Product JSON-LD with price, currency and availability, plus BreadcrumbList. Then check real-user Core Web Vitals: Google's 'good' thresholds are Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint within 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1.
SeloraX SEO Studio checks the on-page items on this list for any product URL and writes the fixes — title, meta description, FAQ, alt text and JSON-LD. On SeloraX stores it applies them automatically.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a product title tag be?
Aim for roughly 50–60 characters in English so the title is not truncated in Google results. Bangla script takes more space on screen, so Bangla titles work best shorter, around 30–50 characters.
Can I use the manufacturer's product description?
You can start from it, but pages that carry the same text as many other stores often end up 'Crawled – currently not indexed'. Add your own copy: use cases, compatibility, what is in the box, and answers to real buyer questions.
Why is my product page indexed but getting no traffic?
Usually one of three reasons: it ranks for too few searches because the copy lacks the words buyers use, it ranks but the title and description do not earn clicks, or the pages above it have more authority. Search Console query data tells you which.
Do product pages need an FAQ section?
Not necessarily, but a short FAQ with self-contained answers helps shoppers and gives AI answer engines clean passages to quote. Keep the answers factual and visible on the page.
